The Grand Beatbox Battle 2023: World League (also abbreviated to GBB 2023 or GBB 23) was the 13th edition of the Grand Beatbox Battle, an international beatboxing competition hosted by Swissbeatbox. The event took place from October 18–21, 2023 in the EX Theater Roppongi in Tokyo, Japan, marking the first time that GBB was held outside of Europe.[1][2] Official afterparties took place each day in the 1OAK Tokyo, R3 Club Lounge and BAIA, as well as a 7 to Smoke event on October 22 at Spotify O-EAST.[3][4]
History[]
The Grand Beatbox Battle 2023 was confirmed to be in production following the cancellation of GBB 2022 on April 26, 2022,[5] and an official teaser was released on September 17.[2] The teaser announcement revealed that the event would take place in "an all-new city" and included an image of the skyline of Tokyo, Japan, leading many to speculate that it had moved to the country. On October 1, Swissbeatbox confirmed on social media that GBB 2023 would take place in Tokyo.[1] On November 1, Swissbeatbox announced the rules and regulations of the Wildcards with a second phase for Solo & Loopstation Wildcards (Initially Top 25 and Top 15 respectively and then Top 27 and Top 20 respectively) and two new categories, Producer Showcase, where unlimited devices and controllers can be used for a Loopstation, as this last category will become exclusively for use by the BOSS RC-505 and BOSS RC-505 MKII, and U18, where there will be a competition for beatboxers of any age under 18.[4] The Tag Team Loopstation category was postponed to a future GBB edition and the Wildcards process started on January 1. On January 3, Swissbeatbox did a livestreaming together with the Wildcard Judges of the categories.[6]
